Christine Clarke is Professorial Research Fellow and NHMRC Principal Research Fellow, University of Sydney Medical School - Westmead, and Co-Director, Centre for Cancer Research, Westmead Institute for Medical Research. The group’s research focuses on understanding mechanisms through which the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone control the function of normal and cancerous cells, and in the interplay between nuclear receptors in normal and cancer tissues, with the eventual aim of understanding the role of hormones in cancer development and progression. She was honoured by the National Breast Cancer Foundation with the Patron’s Award for Outstanding Commitment to Breast Cancer Research in 2009, a Patron’s Award for Excellence in Breast Cancer Research in 2013, a Pink Circle Award in 2011, and by the NHMRC as a High Achiever in Health and Medical Research in 2013. Christine directs the Australian Breast Cancer Tissue Bank, and is a member of the Biospecimens Stakeholder Network of the Cancer Institute NSW and the NSW Ministry of Health Biobanking Advisory Group. She chaired the NHMRC Reference Group on Biobanks and Genetic Registers. She has contributed as member of numerous external committees or working parties for health-related organisations, including serving on the Boards of the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Cancer Council NSW, and on the NHMRC principal committee, the Health Advisory Committee. She has contributed to advocacy through holding executive office in the Australian Society for Medical Research, and participated in national strategic development, through membership of the Commonwealth Cancer Strategies Group, National Breast Cancer Centre and National Breast Cancer Foundation working parties.
