Professor Stephen Rogerson trained in clinical infectious diseases. After completing a PhD at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, he went to Malawi on a Wellcome Trust fellowship. There, he began work on malaria and its effects on pregnant women, which continues to be the principal focus of his research. From Malawi, he joined the University of Melbourne’s Department of Medicine where he heads a group of 12 staff and students. His group recently completed a large trial of malaria prevention in pregnancy in Papua New Guinea. His research interests include understanding the pathogenesis of malaria induced low birth weight, the development of protective immunity to malaria in pregnancy, and the interaction between malaria and maternal nutrition.
